Jackie Evancho: ‘America’s Got Talent’

Folks, this type of thing never happens. Oh, who are we kidding—it happens all the time. (See: Greyson Chance, Lin Yu Chun, etc.) Ten-year-old Pittsburgh native Jackie Evancho was chosen by America’s Got Talent viewers to compete in last night’s YouTube acts round. And not only did Jackie—who, as host Nick Cannon said, has a timeless voice—sing well, she blew the judges away and her competition out of the water. This of course led us to dig up Evancho’s cover of Britney Spears’ “Everytime,” from her debut album Prelude To A Dream (it’s on iTunes)

And, yes—six years later, we still find it confounding to write this song’s title as one word

Jackie Evancho: Little Operatic Powerhouse

Could Jackie Evancho be the next Susan Boyle?

The 10-year-old opera singer impressed the judges Tuesday night during a live performance on “America’s Got Talent.” The public voted overwhelmingly to keep her out of 20,000 YouTube videos submitted.

“I’m sort of half excited and half terrified,” admitted judge Piers Morgan before the show which was filmed live in Hollywood, a first in its five-year history. “I have no idea what’s going to happen. Well, it’s the most unpredictable show we’ve ever done.”

Evancho hails from Pittsburgh and the little operatic small wonder is so good that if you listened without looking you’d think she was a seasoned opera star. Her voice is at turns emotive, heartfelt and angelic.

“That is one of the most extraordinary performances I’ve seen on ‘America’s Got Talent’,” said Morgan. Howie Mandel agreed and the judges relished in the fact that they found “talent” and a bonafide star in Evancho.

Evancho should advance to the next round with no problem, most likely. On Wednesday night’s results show, we’ll learn which YouTube acts will move on to the semi-finals.

Opera singer Jackie Evancho

When a ten-year-old walked out in her pretty pink dress, her blonde hair neatly bobbed, it was hard to imagine she’d have any talent worth watching.

But America’s Got talent may have just found its Susan Boyle.

At 10-years-old, tiny Jackie Evancho has a voice worthy of any opera stage.

The youngster belted out a polished and pitch-perfect Puccini aria with the confidence and voice of someone, as Piers Morgan told her, three tines her age.

Jackie sang O Mio Babbino Caro, with a voice reminiscent of former child star Charlotte Church at her best.

Her performance stunned the crowd, won her a standing ovation, and thrilled the judges.

‘I can’t believe that from this tiny body this huge mature voice that you have,’ said a shocked Sharon Osbourne.

Piers Morgan added: ‘That has to be one of the most astonishing performances that I’ve seen on America’s Got Talent.’

Tonight Jackie sailed through to the semi-final of the show, and will now perform in Las Vegas.

And Jackie was equally thrilled, saying: ‘It feels so amazing, especially when America’s picked me to go through and follow my dreams.’

But she nearly didn’t compete at all.

Jackie was discovered in a special YouTube episode of the show, where producers combed through all the skating dogs, surfing mice and Michael Jackson impersonators.

Her performance was so stunning that conspiracy theorists are already debating whether it was really her.

They seized on the fact that her lips seem slightly out of sync with her words.

But Jackie had the perfect answer to her doubters – belting out an al cappello tune on the stage.

Her performance brought to mind the fairytale of Scottish singer Susan Boyle, who became a worldwide star after performing on Britain’s Got Talent.

Miss Boyle has now accumulated about £10million in royalties after her debut album I Dreamed A Dream sold 8.5million copies.
